Confessions of a ‘Too Tired’ Teacher: Remote Learning Edition

It’s too much, dang it! And I’m too tired!

You a teacher? Then, this one's for you!

If you were dissatisfied with your job before, if you thought you worked long hours before, if you thought you were undervalued before, if you thought you begged for summer vacation to come before… WELCOME REMOTE LEARNING!

Remote Learning came to smack the reality back into us that, yes it can always get worse.

Now remember what my job is here. My job here is to rant, irresponsibly I might add. So let’s get into it...

Are there good things about working from home? Sure there are, it’s just that they almost don’t feel worth it.

What do we do now more than we’ve ever done before?

  • Grade work

  • Talk to parents

  • Meet with administration

  • Professional Development

  • Webinars

What do we do now that is the same as before?

  • Wake up early

  • Help kids and parents

  • Repeat the directions over and over again for kids and now parents

  • Assist in every way we can just for some people to STILL not understand what we’ve been saying and explaining

What good has come from this?

  • Not having to leave the house and get dressed and what not so early in the morning.

  • My job has finally given me the wiggle room to “Goof off” just a little!

(You can’t really appreciate this comment unless you’ve read my blog post about Goof Proof Jobs.)

  • Most parents realizing that our line of work is very difficult

  • Most parents now understand that we deserve every break we get.

  • Most parents now understand just how difficult it is to teach their own kid(s) let alone 20+ other children

  • Oh and my most favorite: parents realizing just how ANNOYING their own child is. Hahaha!

So with all this good, what could possibly be bad about Remote Learning?

  • We (teachers) work longer hours than we ever have before

  • Stress levels have skyrocketed

  • Parents won’t leave us alone

  • A break doesn’t really feel like a break unless you ignore everyone.

  • Learning how to only halfway use these different programs and platforms

  • ALL THE MEETINGS - I hate all of these meetings!!!

  • AND ALL OF THESE NEW RANDOM EXPECTATIONS

Let's just be honest...

What's hilarious to me is that in the last few years we haven’t even come close to all the Professional Development opportunities we’ve received in the last couple weeks.

Huh…

We should really think about that…

You know we talk about thinking about children holistically and yet many have the nerve to continue to ask students and parents to keep learning new platforms.

One of the reasons distance learning has been so difficult for people is because they struggle to establish a routine and structure. At no point should a child be sitting in front of a computer all day long.

If you’re like me, some of the most annoying parts of your day will be sitting in a meeting where other teachers are reaching for the moon with what they are doing and you sitting there like “not this regular person right here, sitting in this small house with a bunch of other noisy individuals.”

Teachers out here kissing virtual butt like it matters.

Geez people, relax!

Can’t we all just eat, chill, and get fresh air? SMH

To all my “TOO Tired” Teachers, hang in there! This Summer is OURS... to rest… I guess LOL!

Remember, Rant Irresponsibly or responsibly. Heck, it’s up to you. Just whatever you do, rant! You deserve it!

Yours Truly,

Irresponsibly Single
