Confessions of a ‘Too Tired’ Teacher: Whose Summer was this?

Well I don’t know about y‘all but this barely felt like Summer vacation... 😒

The News:

God bless the news for doing their job of keeping us informed (as much as they are allowed to) regarding COVID-19 and the various phases of states opening back up. 🙏🏾 But...ummm... I could have lived without hearing about schools until August was almost over. The great debate of whether to open schools has been excruciating to listen to.

No one seems to have any idea really of what they are doing. The ideas are just that, ideas, theories. The plan still hasn’t been solidified. How can they send students and teachers back to school based on these mediocre plans. There are still so many questions to be answered and safety concerns to be addressed.

Apparently it's okay to go to work because we don't have a preexisting condition but it's okay to expose someone we live with who has a preexisting condition. That's like saying, "we don't want to kill you, just your family. You're okay with that, right?" I completely understand the need to go back. However, I don't believe in going back until we are fully ready to do so.

COVID-19

How could you? You stole the only thing teacher's have to brag about, the Summer off. You trapped us inside with not a lot of places to go. Sure, we didn't have to work, but that's only part of the fun. You were supposed to go as quickly as you came, but no you just had to be the person that leaves the party last. NO ONE likes the person that's the last to leave the party and do you know why? Because it means that person has nothing BETTER to do with his time. How will you repay us, huh? How will you compensate me?

Emails:

Emails have literally become the bane of my Summer. I have never received more work related emails in my entire summer life. The most upsetting part about the emails for me is the simple fact that I have a difficult time ignoring them. They come straight to my phone and I don't like when my emails pile up because I'm a freak like that, so I have to check them. Now you might think: Eli, why didn't you just turn off your work emails?

Simple: The same reason I try not to mess with my alarms too much. I may forget to turn them back on and then I'll end up late and angry.

I also like to pretend, in my mind that I won't check them but I in the end I know I will. #emails

Webinars / PD

I know I said at the end of the year I would rather learn the platforms I am going to need over the Summer as opposed to the start of the school year, but I'm pretty sure I lied to myself without meaning to.

LOL!

I should've known I wouldn't want to go when the day and time arrived for me to attend. I did go though. I tried my hardest to pay attention too, but alas ... I failed in many cases. Some of the webinars were too early for me to really internalize everything I learned. But waiting to do it all in August wouldn't work either, because honestly no one wants to spend their entire August doing that. Well, maybe some people do, but I know I don't.

UGH ...

Summer 2020, you have been about as good as the rest of this year has been.
